Wed 7th September

It was the Kings Lynn Stars biggest match of the year, on Sky Sports, and with them needing to take all 3 league points to guarantee their place in this year's play offs. Koz made the gate in his first ride, coming out of bend two in second behind Brummies rider Claus Vissing. On the third lap, as Kozza tried all he could to get under Vissing, he turned the bike around and fell. With Sitera in fourth, he had nowhere to go and ran straight into Kozzas left arm and head. Kozza was unconscious for around 4 minutes on the track and when he woke, he had extreme shoulder pain. After a few hours at the hospital, it was found that he had dislocated his shoulder. The following morning, Kozza attended the fracture clinic in Kings Lynn and was delivered the news that he had also fractured his shoulder. It will be a minimum of 6 weeks on the sideline but Kozza hopes to be back riding for the Bandits before the end of the 2011 season.

It was another wet night for the Berwick Bandits - this time though, with the Plymouth Devils as their guests. It was an awesome night for the Bandits, winning by a huge margin. Koz finished his first ride in second place behind Pepe Franc for a 5-1. In his next heat, there was no change with Koz and Pepe charging from the gate with the Plymouth riders not even putting up a fight. By this point, the rain was steadily falling. In his third heat of the night, Koz lead from the gate but slowed over the line to allow Pepe Franc through for his third victory of the night. In his fourth ride, and the last for the night, Koz made the gate with Jade Mudgway also making the gate. Koz allowed him the lead and followed him home for another paid win. It was a paid maximum for Koz finishing on 8+4 points. He wasn't the only Bandit on a max though with Lee Complin, Seb Alden and Pepe Franc all finishing on maximum points. Not far away from them was Mitchell Davey, only dropping one point on the night also. A good win for the Bandits, and a big thank you must go to the Plymouth riders for persevering with the weather, to ensure the meeting ran smoothly, and being abandoned after 12 heats due to the poor conditions.

It was Kozzas first home match back as a Kings Lynn Star! This time against the Peterborough Panthers. In his first heat, he finished second behind Panther, Kasper Gomolski who managed to get the jump on him from the start. Troy Batchelor lead home Kozzas next race with Niels Kristian Iversen in second and Koz in third, getting the paid second. After the race though, there were some heated words shared between Koz and Gomolski after a hard first turn and a few elbows thrown! In his third heat of the night, Kozza continued his points scoring trend, finishing in a paid second position behind Michael Jepson Jenson and Lasse Bjerre. His fourth heat of the night proved vital as he followed Oliver Allen home for a big 5-1, putting the Stars in the lead. A reserve swap was done for heat 14, with Koz filling in for Filip Sitera - who unfortunately failed to score. It proved a good move as Koz finished in another paid second position behind Mads Korneliussen with Linus Sundstrom taking the win for the Panthers. It went down to heat 15 but the Stars managed to take the win 47-43 with Koz contributing a 7+4 scorecard.

It was the return leg of the Workington trip on the August bank holiday Monday. Workington has proved to be quite a challenge for the Bandits in the past, but today was different with the Bandits running them within 1 point! In the first race, Koz finished in third place. But in his second - he hit the tapes!! Twice in one weekend!! The Bandits management put him off 15m and it was an awesome race by Koz as he got into third place and almost grabbed second on the line! In his third race, he finished with another third place, leaving him on just 3 points from 3 rides. His last ride was awesome, as he battled with Tom Topinka for the entire race. He was throwing everything at Tom and swooped around the wide line in turn 3/4 and managed to take the win on the line. A great victory to end the night for Koz (on 6 points) as the Bandits lost 47-46, stealing away a league point from the Comets.

Third time lucky for the arrival of the Workington Comets, with it raining once again! But the meeting had to be run. It was a tough start to the night for Kozza with a tapes exclusion in his first race. However, he made up for that in his next two heats with two big wins in the trying conditions. In his fourth race of the night, Koz was leading by half a lap over ex team mate, Tom Topinka and Bandits team mate, Mitchell Davey. Coming into the last bend, Koz had a slip in concentration and went down! It was enough for Topinka to get past but he managed to get up and finish the race in second place. The meeting was called off after 12 heats with the track conditions being far too dangerous to carry on. It was a gallant effort by all those who took part as the rain fell all night. The abandoned score left the Bandits with a 40-34 lead, giving the Comets one league point in the process. Koz finished the night on 8 points.

It was another away guest booking, this time for the Redcar Bears against league leaders, Glasgow Tigers. It was always going to be a tough match but from the offset, Koz was fast. An awesome gate in his first race seen him head home Gary Havelock, Richard Sweetman and Christian Henry. His next race was another awesome start, but a small locker in the first bend allowed Joe Screen through with Koz finishing the race in a close second place. In his third, it was a tight race with Havelock in front, Nick Morris and James Grieves for the Tigers in second and third and Koz throwing everything he could at them in fourth. Coming into turn one for the last lap, Morris smashed into Havelocks back wheel and was sent straight into the fence. Kozza layed it down to avoid Morris and the race was awarded with Koz getting third place. In his last race, as he waited at the line, Kozzas throttle stuck on - he tried the kill switch and that didn't work so he pulled the spark plug out & was bouncing around at the start line from the zap!! Fellow Aussie, Arlo Bugeja was straight out with Kozzas spare bike for the start of the race with a minute to go. Koz was in second for much of the race, trying inside and outside to get past Christian Henry, when he swooped around the outside on lap 3 on the back straight and had the lead from there to take another chequered flag for the Bears, much to the delight of the home fans! Another great night as a guest for Kozza scoring 9 points and the Bears winning the meeting 48-42.

Another Berwick home match, against the Newcastle Diamonds!!! This time though, Koz was flying! A first place in his first race set the tone for the night for the Bandits. He was against Aussie, Jason Lyons in his second ride and although he threw everything at Lyons, it wasn't quite enough and Koz had to settle for second. He followed that with another two big wins, giving him another heat 15 appearance. It was a good start for Koz in heat 15, but an even better start for Lyons. Once again, Koz gave chase but couldn't quite reel in Lyons and was happy with a second place as the Bandits took a big 54-40 win over the Diamonds. An awesome 13 point score for Koz, top point scorer on the night.

It was Kozzas first meeting in the blue and yellow of the Kings Lynn Stars. It was an away match against the Wolverhampton Wolves. His first heat of the night proved to be a big learning curve for Kozza, finishing 4th and coming straight into the pits to make some bike changes. His second heat was much better with a solid third place. His third ride of the night, he made a great start and finished in second place. Being the reserve, he can take up to 7 rides on the night and Rob Lyon was certainly making use of that as Kozza was out straight away for a fourth ride. He made another great start but was out muscled in the first corner and could only manage a fourth place. In his 5th ride of the night, he teamed with Mads Korneliussen to take a vital 5-1 against the Wolves, putting the stars back in the match. From that heat onwards, the teams were on a draw with Koz finishing fourth in his last ride. Luckily, his team mate finished first, keeping it level. It went down to the wire but the Wolves riders took a 5-1 in heat 15 to secure the victory, despite losing a league point to the Stars. It was a good debut for Kozza scoring 5+1 points, on a track he had only visited once previously.

Saturday the 13th proved to be like Friday the 13th for Kozza!! After a big 5-1 against the Ipswich Witches in his first heat, Koz was then leading the second when he had an engine failure on bend 4 of the third lap. The damage was so bad that the bike couldn't be pushed back to the pits, it had to be carried. Things then didn't get better, when out in his next heat, the bike had no power and he finished in fourth - which doesn't happen very often around Sheilfield! He jumped on his spare bike for his last heat and finished in second place taking his score to 4+1 points for the night. It was the second night of the tour for the Bandits, this time, taking on the Plymouth Devils. Only Jade Mudgway had seen the track before so it was going to prove a test for the Bandits boys. But it didn't defer the boys from giving it their all, with all the Bandits putting in a stellar performance. Heat 1 started perfectly with a 5-1 with Pepe taking the win and Koz taking second over the Devils riders. Heat two was much the same, with Koz making the gate, Pepe dropping into second behind him and taking another 5-1. In his third heat, Koz was battling into the first corner and he went a little too high where the track had no grip, causing him to lay the bike down. He remounted and continued on in the race but could only manage 4th place. The most exciting race of the night was definitely Kozzas last ride, with him in third place and battling around the Devils rider who was in second place and then catching and passing (on the fence!!) first place. He took the chequers with inches to spare from going in the fence! It was the Bandits biggest ever recorded win away from home, smashing the Devils 57-36 with Koz finishing the night on 8+1 points. Somerset Rebels are one of the most impressive teams in the league at the moment, and they certainly showed Berwick a rough time around Oak Tree Arena. On the positive side, it was a good night for Koz with another solid score. In his first heat, he was unfortunately on the wrong end of a Somerset 5-1. He and Pepe Franc rectified that in their second race scoring a 5-1 against the Rebels with Pepe in the lead and Koz protecting him in second. Alex Davies pushed him all the way but in the end they were able to hang on for the vital points. It was another third place for Koz in his third heat but he followed that with a big first place, teaming with Mitch Davey to 5-1 the Rebels again. It was another heat 15 appearance for Koz but he only managed a fourth place behind Sam Masters, Anders Mellgren and Mitch Davey taking third. The second phase for the Bandits began at Owlerton Stadium, home of the Sheffield Tigers. It's a nice big track, similar to Australian tracks but very narrow, and it's a place Kozza enjoys to ride. He started off the night with a third place and then improved on that result in his next ride, taking second place behind Shane Parker. It was a good battle all race between the Aussies, but Parkers experience around Owlerton prevailed. In his third race of the night, it was another third place, but behind team mate Pepe Franc. In his fourth, he was out to prove a point and made a brilliant gate over the opposition. He was pushed all race by the Tigers but in the end, he took a convincing win. He was rewarded of his efforts with a heat 15 appearance against Shane Parker, Josh Auty and his team mate, Seb Alden. It was a good start made by all with Koz slotting into third place behind Alden. He was sitting comfortable until Josh Auty dive bombed him going into the third bend and almost had him off. It was a harsh move by Auty but Koz kept the bike upright and finished the race in fourth place. Another good score for Koz, 7+1 points.

Another day, another guest booking. This time for Glasgow against the Scunthorpe Scorpions. Koz has a great record around the Scunny track and proved to be a vital guest for the Tigers, although they didn't take the win. In his first heat, Koz got a great gate and was leading the way but with Richard Hall behind him, it was always going to be difficult to hold the Scorpion back. Home track knowledge came into play as Hall rode the high line around bends 3 and 4 to take the win. In his next race, Kozzas start wasn't as sharp as the first time round, but with a nice cut back coming out of bend two he worked his way into third. Coming into bend 3, he went up the inside of Ben Wilson, with Wilson laying the bike down. There was no contact but the referee named Kozza as the cause of the stoppage, leaving him to watch from the sidelines. Third race out, it was a paid second for Kozza, following home Tigers team mate, and fellow Aussie, Nick Morris. In his fourth ride of the night, it was always going to be difficult against the home number one rider, David Howe. And it was Howe who lead from start to finish with Koz finishing closely in second. The Tigers management gave Koz the all important heat 15, but unfortunately the Tigers pairing got a 5-1 against leaving the score at 54-36 with Koz scoring 6+1 point including an exclusion.

He gated well and got into second place but managed to be overtaken by the opposition. After a quick gearing change he was out again for his third race, finishing in third place. His last ride of the night was almost an imitation of the first, a good lead from the gate but as the chequers came out, Stars rider Filip Sitera got a heap of drive coming out of the final bend on the inside and managed to pip Koz at the line. Kozza scores his first max of the year against the Rye House Rockets!!

Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good night for the Bandits with fellow team mates, Mitch Davey, Jade Mudgway and Alex Edberg all getting injured – with Alex requiring emergency hospital treatment. With all the accidents and injuries around him Koz showed great professionalism to keep his head down and ride hard, virtually keeping Berwick in the meeting. In his first race of the night, Berwick were down 9 points to 3 when Koz hit back with a big 5-1 with team mate, Pepe Franc. His second race of the night was to be the same, with Pepe in front, Koz in second. In his third heat of the night, Kozza lined up against two other unbeaten riders – Pepe Franc and Rye House rider – Steve Boxall. His recent form of excellent starts were on his side again as he flew from the tapes, pulling a huge lead by the end of the race with Pepe once again following him home – keeping his max in tact also. It was then that Edberg had his accident, putting a dampener on the night. With such a horrific crash, you could only imagine how focused the boys had to be to keep the meeting going. With Koz straight out in the next heat, it was down to him to keep the Bandits in touch. Tyson Nelson made the gate off one with Kozza a close second off gate two. Koz hunted him down for two laps, pushing Nelson to make a mistake. And when he left a little too much room on the outside exiting turn 2, that was an instant invitation for Kozza, and he stormed passed taking the lead. The Berwick fans went nuts and Kozza finished the night on 11+1 points, his first max for 2011. The Bandits then managed to score a big 5-1 in heat 13 with Lee Complin and Seb Alden before the meeting got abandoned due to the time curfew. It was an awesome sight to have the boys rally hard to win the meeting for Alex – and they done it by just two points. Had they ran heat 15, I think Kozza would’ve been a hard man to stop!

It was time to suit up for the Belle Vue Aces in the Sky Sports Elite League fixture against the Lakeside Hammers. Koz had a good start to the night, following home team mate Ricky Kling for a paid third in his first race. He then made a good start in his second heat, pushing Hammers guest Ulrich Ostergaard wide in the first turn to take third place and he held him back to take another paid third behind a team mate. With each lap Koz was progressively faster and smoother. He made a fast start to his third heat but left a little bit of space which the Hammers riders grabbed and unfortunately the night ended for Koz with a fourth place finish as reserve swap came into play in heat 14, and Koz was taken out of his remaining ride. It was a disappointment to the Aces reserve as he made some bike changes and felt confident in getting the all important points to keep the Aces within point scoring distance. He finished with 2 + 2 points from three rides.

Heading into this meeting against Redcar, Kozza had never won a race on the track – despite loving it! Tonight was definitely NOT one of those nights! Koz made an awesome start in his first race against Matej Kus and Gary Havelock and team mate Pepe Franc. After the first turn, the three riders couldn’t seem to keep up as Koz stormed to his first 3 pointer at the Redcar track. The end to Kozzas bad luck at Redcar? So it seemed! The next race was the same, sharp gating and away for the win. In his third heat of the night, he was against fellow Aussie Jason Lyons. Lyons made a good gate with his team mate, Lubos Tomicek in second. Koz quickly got past Tomicek but couldn’t gain any ground on Lyons. Koz slowed the race up to try hold up Tomicek so Franc could sweep around the outside for the extra point but it wasn’t to be. In his fourth heat of the night, the Bandits were down only by a couple of points. With Koz making an awesome gate and Mitch Davey making an equally as good one, Koz team rode with Mitch to take an awesome 5-1 against the Juul/Kus pairing. As heat 15 approached, the Redcar Bears held a one point lead. Bandit, Seb Alden made the gate, Koz was on the outside of Lyons with Havvy at the back. Aldens bike packed up and as he lost engine power, he rode wide, pushing Kozza right up the fence, allowing Lyons to slip underneath. Somehow, Koz remained in second place, but with the bears taking the 4-2 advantage, the Bandits lost the meeting – but gained a league point. It was Kozzas best night at Redcar – top point scoring for the Bandits on 13 points!

The Berwick Bandits took on the Rye House Rockets in scorching 30 degree heat today. The track was soaked upon arrival but barely lasted the first race as the dust covered the crowd – making it hard to watch the racing. Koz had a tough start to the meeting, coming 4th after being squeezed out in the first corner. He quickly bounced back, grabbing second place in his next race. As the track changed, the racing line became wider and wider and benefited the riding style of Kozza. He posted two wins in succession and was one of the only threats to the Rye House team as they streaked ahead in the points score. As the boys lined up for heat 15, exiting the second bend, there wasn’t much to be seen by the crowd, as Koz entered turn ¾ he went for an outside run around the two Rockets and slid off. He was excluded from the re-start but it gave fellow Bandit, Seb Alden, another crack. He made a great gate off 4 and took the win. Rye House were too strong for the Bandits but it was a good meeting for Koz, finishing second top point scorer on 8 points.

Another guest booking for Ipswich, another great score for Kozza! Guesting for the injured Witches rider, Morten Risager, Kozza made a great start to the night finishing second behind a very fast, Stuart Robson – from the Newcastle Diamonds. Robbo’s Elite League experience definitely showed as he rounded Koz in the first bend and never looked back. In his second ride of the night, Koz bounced back with a superb win over the Diamonds number 1 and 2 pairing of Leigh Lanham and Derek Sneddon. He also took a solid win in his third heat, putting him onto 8 points from three rides. He then took a rider replacement ride for Lasse Bjerre and unfortunately got a 5-1 against. It was a simple case of not quite making it to the first corner in front and the Diamonds pair managed to hold him back for the four laps. Heat 14 was set to be an awesome race, with the unbeaten Robson off gate one and the determind Smith off gate 4. Koz made the gate and streaked away from Robson – bringing a holt to his unbeaten scorecard. Pete Simmons then rewarded Kozza on his excellent performance by putting him in heat 15. The meeting was down to the wire as Koz and Witches partner, Kevin Doolan, couldn’t allow the Diamonds to get a 5-1 advantage as they would then take all 4 points from the meeting. As they went to the tapes, Koz’s number one machinery failed to start and he had to jump on his spare bike which had sat idle all night. Having a cold bike with a different set up could’ve won or lost the meeting for the Witches, and fortunately, Koz made it the latter. Robson made a flier with Doolan in second and Kozza in third. Leigh Lanham was all over him, trying everything he could to pass and much to the delighted fans, Koz held him back, making the final result 47-44 to the Witches. Another great scorecard for Koz with a 13+1 points haul.

In the re-run, it appeared to the crowd that Monarch – Craig Cook, had done the same thing but the ref let it go. Koz gave chase after Cookies quick start but couldn’t manage to reel him in. In his fourth heat of the night, Koz made the gate on the outside of fellow Ipswich rider Jeran Hart. It was another great race from Koz, holding the two Monarchs back and sheparding home the young Ipswich reserve for the 5-1, sealing the win on the night for the Witches team. Team manager, Pete Simmons gave Koz the all important heat 15 race on the night. He once again got pulled back after making another super fast start and then in the re-run, seemed to be stuck behind Ipswich’s Lasse Bjerre and couldn’t get past. Sheffield had got the better of Berwick early on in the year at their home track, so it was Berwicks turn to get revenge when the Tigers ventured to Sheilfield Park. It was a tough start for Koz with a third place in heat one behind Tigers guest, Aaron Summers and new Swedish team mate Seb Alden. He then bounced back in his second outing with a great first place. It was obvious to the fans that the track had been set up differently as both teams seemed to be struggling with bends 3 and 4 – with two riders going down and with many others lifting through the corner. Kozzas third heat proved to be his time to test out the fence on bend 4. His bike lifted and he had no option but to bail out and ended up back first in the fence – breaking the panel and bending his bike. In his fourth heat out, Kozza got a well deserved third after hurting his elbow in his previous ride. The Bandits won the meeting on the night, but it wasn’t such a great night for Koz – experience clutch problems early on and then his fall in his third heat. He finished the night on 5+1 points.

Kozza Smith is the 2011 Star of Anglia! The Star of Anglia event hadn’t been run in over ten years and has some very prestigious names on the honour roll – and now, you can find Kozza Smith on that honour roll!! It was an awesome nights racing for Koz, claiming a second behind Ricky Wells in his first heat and following on from that was 3 dominant wins. As it came down to heat 19 – which Koz had to win, he lined up against Elite League rider, Olly Allen, Ipswich boy Taylor Poole and ex-Ipswich rider Leigh Lanham. Koz made his poorest gate of the night but rode a great first bend, coming out of the tight first corner in first place. He then continued to pull away with ease – claiming a one point victory on the night over Sam Masters, with Allen rounding out the podium in third. The only blip Koz had all night was in his third heat, after beating Sam Masters in the race, the two boys were shaking hands and talking about the race while riding back to the pits, they then managed to get their handlebars hooked and crashed down the back straight! The fans all laughed and cheered when both boys stood up and bowed to huge Ipswich crowd. Koz is turning out to be quite a favourite at Ipswich – scoring himself some guest bookings for the future with the club.

It was the 6th year running of the Ashley Jones Memorial at Kings Lynn’s Norfolk Arena, as the riders celebrated the life of Ash by racing an individual meeting with £800 up for grabs for the winner. Throughout the night, it was obvious that the boys weren’t racing for the money – but racing for the honour of their mate. The line up consisted of numerous Aussies, a few Brits, with a few European boys chucked in the mix. It was an awesome start for Koz – winning his first four heats convincingly. He then dropped his only heat point in his last ride to fellow Aussie – Taylor Poole. TP got the gate on Koz and managed to take the lead early on, leaving Koz to sit comfortably in second – making him the first pick of the gate in the all important final. Koz chose gate two, with Sam Masters choosing gate one. TP chose gate three, leaving the outside run for the only Brit to make the final – Simon Lambert. Koz made an awesome gate, taking the lead with Masters in second. The four boys were so close you could almost throw a blanket over them! The lead changed numerous times with Koz in front, then Sam nipped past and vice versa. Going into the last corner, Koz passed Sam up the inside, went a little wide to get the run and Sam squared up, leaving it a drag race to the finish line. It was tight, but the top spot was given to Masters with Koz, about an inch behind! It was the best individual meeting seen by spectators for a long time and an awesome tribute to Ashley Jones.

Kozza moved to number 2 in the Berwick side for the home match against the Glasgow Tigers tonight. The reason being, they welcomed their new Swede – Alex Edberg into the side. It was an awesome start for Koz, making a superb gate and pulling away to finish the length of the straight infront of Joe Screen, Theo Piper and Bandits guest, Craig Cook. In his second heat, he made an equally great start, not being challenged by anyone, pulling a massive lead once again to take the important win. In his third heat of the night, Koz made another great start and lead from start to finish putting him 3 from 3!! In his fourth heat, Koz had gate 1 with Glasgow guest, Matty Wethers in gate 2. Wethers made a great gate, clamping Kozza in the first bend, leaving him at the back of the pack. As Koz started to wind it on, he nipped underneath Nick Morris going into turn one and began chase of the two infront. Unlucky for Morris though as he high sided, leaving him nursing a broken collarbone and the race continued, with Koz in third place. He was given the job of racing heat 15 with fellow Bandit, Lee Complin. The boys needed at least a 3-3 to keep the match square. In the first run the referee called all four back and warned Kozza for anticipating the start. In the second re-run, the Berwick fans went wild as one of the Glasgow team anticipated the gate and it was left to run. Koz couldn’t make an impact back in third place with Complin in fourth. The Tigers won the match 46-44 but Koz scored a bag of points, scoring 11+1 on his debut at number two!

Kozza got the call up to ride for Belle Vue on a very overcast and windy Thursday night against the on-form Swindon Robins. With a light showering of rain between 6 and 7pm, it made the track very tricky with all riders saying that it was very patchy. In heat two of the night, Koz lined up against fellow Aussies Josh Grajczonek and Corey Gathercole (riding for the Robins) and fellow Ace, Ricky Kling. Koz made a cracking gate but the other 3 boys had too much power and managed to pass him coming into bend 3. This meant a quick bike change set up in the pits for Kozza. He continued to make brilliant gates all night but just managed to get pipped on the line on more than one occasion. In one race of the night, Rory Schlien streaked ahead while Koz was in second, holding Scott Nicholls back for three laps. But he found out quickly that just a slight mistake in the Elite League and the opposition are right by you. He finished the night only scoring 1+1 points but gaining some more valuable Elite League experience.

It was the return leg today with the Berwick Bandits making their way to Leicester for the first time. The sun was shining, which meant the track was soaking the water up – and fast. In the first heat of the night for Koz, he and Pepe made a flier from the gate, relegating Hall and Tressarieu to the back. They couldn’t make an impact as Koz and Pepe team rode and took a brilliant 5-1. Kozzas next race was a battle of the Aussies as he lined up next to one of his best mates, Richard Sweetman. Sweety made a great gate and took the lead with Koz right behind him in second. It was a close race with Koz shadowing Sweety throughout the race but with the track being quite one lined, it was always going to be hard to pass. He then took an R/R ride for injured Bandit – Stichauer. Koz flew from the gates and took an awesome lead over the two lions, sweeping around Jan Graverson beside the boards on the back straight of lap one. In his fourth heat of the night, Kozza made a good start but was run wide and lost his position. As he battled hard from the back, it was apparent the sun was in the riders eyes making it even more difficult than before to pass! He rode a hard 4 laps but couldn’t make the pass on fellow Aussie, Oliver, for third. In his fourth programmed heat of the night, he was out to make amends for his last placing in the race before. Kozza made an awesome gate off four and took the lead and extended it as the race went on, finishing the night on 10+1 points. After heat 15, the final result was 45-45. It was the Bandits first away points for the year and a great two nights of racing for the Kozza Smith Racing Team.

2011 sees the return of the Leicester Lions to the Premier League, and tonight was their first trip to the Berwick track. With quite a strong 1-7 it was always going to be a tough match for the Bandits. Koz started his night with a third place in heat 3 behind the fast gating Richard Hall and Mat Tressarieu. A few quick bike changes and Koz was out again for his second race of the night. As the rain started to drop, Kozza flew from the gates and took a commanding lead. The two lions and his team mate Gary Irving, couldn’t make an impact on Kozzas lead. Once again in his third heat, he was unstoppable from the gates taking another great win. His fourth ride of the night was going to be another tough one with Tressarieu lined up on the outside. Koz made a brilliant gate and rode Tressarieu up wide, taking the lead and also allowing fellow Bandit, Jade Mudgway, to sneak through on the inside. With both lions battling to try and pass Mudgie, Koz broke away at the front. Always an entertainer, Koz jumped the track fence and ran through high fiving the crowd waving the black and gold Bandits flag!! He was given the go ahead for the all important heat 15 with team mate Lee Complin. The meeting was down to the wire and Berwick needed at least a second place from one of the boys to win the meet. With Complins bike suffering an engine failure on the line, it was up to Koz to get the vital second. As Richard Hall made the gate, Koz nipped up the inside, stole the racing line from Tressarieu and got himself into the all important second position. It was an awesome night for Koz with a 12+1 points return and an even better night for Berwick – taking the win 46-44.

Plymouth vs Redcar – Guest booking for Redcar - RAINED OFF

Monday 2nd May

It was to be Kozzas second home match of the year for the Aces and he was hoping to improve on his previous meeting score against the Wolves. On this occasion, Belle Vue were taking on the Birmingham Brummies. With a team full of guest riders, the Brummies appeared strong from the start. Koz was now partnered at reserve by Ricky Kling who was struggling with competing in the main body of the team. In heat 1, Kozza finished fourth behind a big 5-1 by the Brummies boys. In his next heat he got a solid third place, holding off Brummies guest, Shane Parker at the back. In his third outing, again, a good third place was enough to add another point to Kozza’s tally. With the meeting going down to the wire, team manager Jim Lynch took Koz out from his fourth ride, replacing him with Ricky Kling. It was not the way he wanted to end the meeting – only on 2 points, but he looks forward to getting some more laps around the tricky circuit in the future for the Aces.

The Plymouth Devils had their first away match for the year against the Berwick Bandits, and the home side took advantage of the less experience big track riders in the team. Koz began the night well with a first place in heat 3. His next heat, he lined up against British young gun Ben Barker. A good gate by Barker saw him take the lead with Bandit Pepe Franc in second, with Koz in third. The two Bandits chased hard but Barker had too much speed for them in the end. In his third race of the night, Koz took the rider replacement ride for injured team mate Hynek Stichauer. He made a great gate but couldn’t quite clamp James Cockle who managed to hold him off for a full four laps. He was out again in the next heat and wasn’t about to let that happen again. Koz made a superb gate, got into the lead and won the race comfortably in front of Franc. Race 5 of the night was no different with Kozza making a brilliant gate again, leading from start to finish. Unfortunately, he wasn’t given the go ahead for heat 15 so finished the night on an impressive 12+1 points haul as the Bandits thumped the Devils.

The Lakeside Hammers played host to the Birmingham Brummies – who Kozza was a guest for on this occasion. Guesting for the injured, Claus Vissing – it was a big ask of Koz as he was to line up at number 6, the harder of the 2 reserve berths in the Elite league. He loves a challenge and was certainly up for it when he made a decent gate and even better first corner, coming out in third position behind the two Hammers riders. Entering turn 3, Ricky Wells locked up which in turn caused Kozza to lock up, going down. He quickly picked up his bike and pushed it to the infield for the race to continue. He had a tough night from then on, only scoring a paid third place in his fourth ride. After the conclusion of the race meet, Koz was pretty disappointed with the result and reflected on the meeting by saying, “My gating wasn’t sharp enough tonight and in Elite league, you can’t afford to be slow off the gates. I felt I was riding the track well, just didn’t feel fast”. Kozza hopes to improve on that score when he gets another chance to ride the Lakeside track with the Belle Vue Aces in July.

Thursday 28th April

After a long drive home from Workington Monday, Kozza jumped on a plane Tuesday morning to Germany, built up a bike and drove to Sweden with sponsor, Ulrich Bönte. It was an open meeting and Kozza was to be the only non-Swedish rider competing. Kozzas entry to the meeting was organised by Henka Gustafsson, who proved to be his biggest competition. The first race Koz managed a 2nd place, followed by another 2nd and then three big wins – one over Henka. When the meeting came to an end, Koz had finished on 13 points (second top point scorer) along with 2 other riders so there was to be a run off for 2nd, 3rd and 4th. With only having one engine in Sweden, throughout the night, Koz noticed the bike losing power and having a slight rattle. He went with the smart option and chose to sit out of the re-run giving him 4th overall in the standings on the night, but also, going home with a full engine. It was a good stepping stone into what the Swedish League is all about, and after getting his name out there, hopefully something will come up through the year for Koz.

Berwick travelled to Workington for their 4th away match in this years Premier League. It was a tough meeting to contest, with Workington being too strong on the day. Koz began the meet with a cracking gate, only to be pulled back by the ref. In the re-run, he made an equally good gate but only managed a 3rd place behind fellow Aussie, Rusty Harrison, and old Kings Lynn team mate, Tomas Topinka. He then combined with Bandit, Pepe Franc to take a big 5-1 against the Comets, the only 5-1 of the day for the Bandits. He tussled for the four laps with Dane, Peter Kildemand. With PK fencing Kozza on three separate occasions, and on the last lap, managed to rip some of Koz’s spokes out! After a few bike changes, he was out for his third heat but couldn’t make an impact on the Comets, finishing fourth. A third place in his 4th heat gave Kozza a score of 5+1 points for the meeting. The final scoreline was a big one, with the Bandits left to ponder what went wrong.

Friday 22nd April

Good Friday saw Kozza line up for his first home match of the year with the Belle Vue Aces taking on the Wolverhampton Wolves. The day began well for Koz scoring a second placing in his first race. The track conditions were tricky – it was dusty and with the sun being nice and hot, it made conditions difficult for all riders. It caught Koz out in his second race with him falling entering bend 3. He was excluded for causing the stoppage of the race. In his third heat, he put the bike down again but remounted quickly to continue in the race. It proved a vital move by Kozza as Ty Procters bike packed up down the back straight of the final lap, and with Koz on the gas, he took the all important third place behind team mate Ricky Kling, taking the Aces within two points of the Wolves. In heat 12, Kozza made a blistering gate and was in a comfortable second place behind teammate Charlie Gjedde. Wolves rider, Ludvig Lindgren came in and went tight underneath Koz going into bend 3, unsettling the Aces rider, causing him to slide off. The ref didn’t see this as the case and let the race continue as Koz was left to push his bike off the track. With luck not really going his way, the Aces boss Jim Lynch showed some faith in Kozza and put him in heat 14 as a replacement for David Stachyra. It turned out to be a good reserve swap with Koz bringing home 2 points to take the meeting down to a heat 15 finale.

For the third meeting in as many days, Berwick travelled to Glasgow to face the Tigers in their first fixture on their newly shaped track. It was great to be the Tigers first opponents as there was no home track advantage! Kozza began the day with a fourth place in heat one. But he came back from that and with a vengeance. A second place behind team mate Franc in his second ride really spurred the Berwick boys on, keeping it a tight match. Kozza followed on with a first place in his R/R ride for injured Bandit, Hynek Stichaur and a second in his third programmed heat. In his last race, Kozza made the gate but behind him, Christian Henry lost control and ploughed into the back of him, sending them both into the fence. It was a tense few minutes as Koz had to be checked over by paramedics but managed to jump back up and hobble to the pits, nursing a sore knee and corked thigh. Back out in the re-run, Koz flew from the tapes and pulled a big lead, getting the vital win. 10 + 1 points was enough for Koz to finish top point scorer for the Bandits and put him into the nominated heat 15 race. Alongside him for the Bandits, was Pepe Franc. The Glasgow boys gated, leaving Koz in third with Pepe at the back. It was an unfortunate end to a great day’s racing as Berwick narrowly missed out on grabbing a league point. But a great day for Koz, with 11+1 points to take home.

A quick change to the bike seen Koz out in heat 5 and score another third place behind Franc and one of the Scorpions. Kozza began the night off with a fourth place behind Craig Cook, Kalle Katajisto and team mate Pepe Franc. He bounced back in his next race with a great tussle with Monarch, Andrew Tully, for the lead. Home track experience prevailed with Tully getting by Kozza on lap two for the win. In his third ride, Kozza finished at the back behind Edinburgh’s number 1 and 2 and Franc. In his fourth ride, he was definitely out to prove a point, with Kalle Katajisto getting the run to the first corner; Koz turned the bike up the inside and flew past Kalle for the win. The meeting got off to a great start with the first three heats resulting in a 3 all draw. Then Berwick turned it on, with 6 consecutive 5-1 advantages over the Monarchs. In his first heat, Kozza placed second, behind a super fast Craig Cook, in his second, he was apart of a 5-1 victory, following home team mate Pepe Franc. In race three, Kozza took control from the tapes to the finish line and celebrated in style as he left his bike on the start line, hurdled the fence and ran down the front of the main grandstand, high fiving the excited Berwick fans. His fourth race was no disappointment either, taking another big win, stretching the Berwick lead to beyond the Monarchs grasp. His 10+1 scorecard got him the Heat 15 nominated ride, with team mate Lee Complin. Both boys made a great start, but Cook got the better of them and although the Berwick pairing chased hard, Cook had got that advantage and held it until the chequered flag. Kozza received his second call up of the year for his Elite League side, Belle Vue, on Friday night. The Aces reserve had only been to the Lakeside Arena once before and failed to score on debut whilst riding for the Ipswich Witches in 2010. This year proved to be much different with Kozza making a great gate in his first heat to finish a tight second behind Hammers rider, Robert Mear. He followed on with a third place and then a second – only after a re-start following a coming together with team mate, Charlie Gjedde, where Kozzas hand got caught in Gjedde’s back wheel. With both boys ok, only Kozza took part in the re-run as Gjedde was excluded. Team manager, Jim Lynch, then gave Kozza the reserve swap for his fourth heat, sending him out for Tomasz Picsz, who had failed to score. Another third place behind his team mate was enough to see Belle Vue inch closer to the Hammers in the overall points. In his last heat of the evening, Kozza made the gate but just got squeezed out of the tight first turn and chased hard for third spot rider, Mear. Kozza finished his night on 6 paid 7 points, with the Aces being narrowly defeated 48-45, picking up a league point away from home.

After some bike changes, the pairing of Franc and Smith then hit back with a big 5-1 of their own with Pepe taking the win, with Koz in second. The third outing for the pair resulted in another 5-1 this time with Koz at the front and Pepe in second. Once the boys are on a roll, there is no stopping the Franc/Smith pairing around Shelfield Park.
